Stop and smell the shrooms!

When Dry Rot is actively growing there is always a pungent smell of mushrooms. This should not be confused with the musty smell that is often associated with wet rot.

 

According to some dishonest contractors “Fifty Pound Notes!” is what Dry Rot smells like!

 

Another one bites the dust!

Red Dust is another indicator of a dry rot infestation. This is in fact the spores of this wood attacking fungi. You will commonly find a coating of red dust on top of skirting, window sills, light switches – pretty much where all normal house dust might settle. The presence of this rust coloured dust is unique only to Dry Rot and is a feature not shared by any other wood rot.

 

 

Forbidden Fruit…

If a fruiting body is found, then Dry Rot is almost certainly present somewhere. These tough fleshy, pancake shaped growths are usually found at wood-wall joints. The centre is a yellow ochre colour when young, darkening to rusty red when mature owing to spore production.

This sporophore is usually the first sign that a homeowner will encounter before rushing to Google in order to try to identify this alien like being! At this stage however, widespread damage will have already occurred.

 

What Happens Next?

Successfully eradicating Dry Rot is not an easy task.

The DIY savvy homeowner is discouraged from attempting such an undertaking.
A failed attempt can result in the fungus going into stress mode thereby increasing the growing rate exponentially!

Firstly, an accurate assessment must be made. Be aware that frequently an invasive inspection is required in order to realise the full extent of the problem. This may mean lifting floorboards or drilling into walls, both of which are disruptive and messy.

Once a more comprehensive understanding of the problem has been reached a prescription can be issued along with a quotation for carrying out the necessary works.
